Brake pedals develop a familiar feel after you have driven a vehicle for a while. When the pedal suddenly begins traveling farther, feels soft under your foot, or seems to compress before the brakes respond normally, the change can be difficult to ignore. That sensation can come from several areas of the hydraulic braking system. Technicians look at when the pedal feels soft, whether the condition appeared after recent brake work, whether fluid is being lost, and whether the pedal continues sinking when steady pressure is applied.
