A used SUV can hide expensive problems surprisingly well. It may sit straight in the seller’s driveway, start without hesitation, and feel fine during a quick trip around the block. Then you get it home and discover the rear tires are wearing on the inside, the transfer case is leaking, or the suspension starts knocking once the road gets rough. SUVs also tend to lead harder lives than many passenger cars. Some have spent years hauling kids and cargo. Others have towed trailers, traveled gravel roads, or gone through several sets of mismatched tires. A pre-purchase inspection should look at how the vehicle was actually used, not just whether it has a clean interior and a reasonable number on the odometer.
