What Is Tire Balancing?

Tire balancing is a maintenance task that you should never skip. As you can guess, this service ensures vehicle tires are properly balanced for optimal performance and safety. Otherwise, unbalanced tires can cause vibrations and uneven wear, affecting your vehicle's handling and safety.

What is Tire Balancing?

Tire balancing is the process of equalizing the weight distribution of a tire and wheel assembly. It is performed by adding small weights to the rim of the wheel to counterbalance any inconsistencies with the weight of the wheel.

Why is Tire Balancing Important?

Tire balancing is important because unbalanced tires can cause several issues, including:

  • Vibration: When a tire is unbalanced, it can cause a vibration that can be felt through the steering wheel or the entire vehicle. Not only can it make the driving experience uncomfortable, but it can impact your vehicle's handling.
  • Uneven Wear: Unbalanced tires can wear unevenly, which can lead to premature wear and tear, reducing the lifespan of your tires.
  • Safety: Unbalanced tires can affect your vehicle's stability and handling, making it more difficult to control in dangerous situations.

How Does Tire Balancing Work?

Tire balancing is a relatively simple process that involves the following steps:

  1. Inspection: First, the technician will inspect the tire and wheel assembly for any damage or signs of wear.
  2. Mounting: The tire and wheel assembly will then be mounted onto a balancing machine. Our shop uses a device that spins the tire and wheel at high speed to measure any imbalances.
  3. Weight Placement: Based on the machine's readings, the technician will place small weights on the rim of the wheel to counterbalance any uneven weight distribution.
  4. Recheck: If necessary, additional weights may be added or removed to achieve optimal balance.
  5. Remounting: Once the tire and wheel assembly is properly balanced, it will be remounted onto your vehicle.

If you're experiencing any of the unusual signs mentioned above with your tires, please bring your vehicle to Rainier Automotive for a tire balancing service. We'll have you back on the road in no time.
